Brandon Baca and Jayme Quintana posted state-qualifying scores Monday in the Capital City Golf Invitational at the Santa Fe Country Club.
For Quintana, it was the fourth qualifying leg (only three are required) of the season. The Robertson standout shot an 85, placing third overall.
For Baca, his score of 80 was good for third in the boys’ tourney, and it was his first state-qualifying leg. The Cardinal boys — playing as a full team in only their second tourney of the spring — finished seventh of 13 teams in Santa Fe. They had a four-stroke improvement over their top-six finish Friday in the Marty Sanchez Links.
“That’s the best team score for the boys since I took over the program (last year),” noted coach Gene Gurule.
The boys’ team includes Baca, Casey McElroy, Grant Gregory, Michael Salazar and Chris Quintana.
While the girls’ team — missing two of their usual leaders — didn’t field a full group Monday, two Lady Cardinals each came within a stroke of a state-qualifying leg. Nina Martinez and Karlee Bradley each had a 96.
“It’s good to see our No. 4 and No. 5 getting these scores,” Gurule said.
The Lady Cards have already qualified for state as a team by virtue of scores earlier this school year.
