A baby perished in a car accident on Interstate 25 near Watrous.
The baby’s parents are Mike and Emily Stewart of Colorado Springs, state police said. The baby’s name wasn’t immediately available.
State police Lt. Craig Martin said the family was headed north on the highway during a rainstorm when their car hydroplaned off the road and into some trees around 8 p.m. Sunday.
Mike Stewart and two of his sons escaped without serious injuries, while Emily Stewart suffered extensive leg injuries, Martin said.
The baby is believed to have been secured in a car seat, but the infant was in a vulnerable position in the vehicle, state police said.
The driver, Mike Stewart, was believed to have been going too fast for the weather, Martin said.
“If he had slowed down in the weather, it (accident) would never have happened,” Martin said.
