A 19-year-old Las Vegas man was arrested Friday after he allegedly stabbed another man during an altercation at the river walk near Bridge Street.
Jose Lucero, who resides on the 700 block of Railroad, was being held at the San Miguel County Detention Center on a $10,000 cash bond. Las Vegas police filed paperwork in San Miguel County Magistrate Court on Monday charging him with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, a third-degree felony.
The stabbing victim, Blake McPherson, was transported to Alta Vista Regional Hospital where he was treated and released for a stab wound to the back, according to a statement of probable cause filed in the case.
Las Vegas police were dispatched to Bridge Street Friday in reference to the stabbing. When the officer arrived, he encountered McPherson who reported that he had been stabbed by a man known to him as Jose.
“Mr. McPherson stated he has had problems with Jose in the past and was trying to walk away from the fight when Jose slapped his cellphone out of his hand,” the police affidavit states.
McPherson told the officer he was stabbed in the back when he bent down to pick up the phone. The officer observed a puncture wound to the middle of McPherson’s back.
Police say they encountered Lucero a short distance away.
Lucero told the officer he was walking on the river walk and met up with McPherson. He said they agreed to fight and began to exchange punches.
Lucero told the officer that McPherson pulled out a wallet chain.
“Mr. Lucero states he did not want to get hit with the chain, so he armed himself with a knife,” the affidavit states.
According to the court document, Lucero told the officer he then stabbed McPherson in the back. Police found the knife and placed it into evidence.
An officer also interviewed a witness who was walking with Lucero. The witness told police that Lucero and McPherson agreed to fight and that McPherson at some point pulled out a chain.
The witness said that’s when Lucero stabbed McPherson in the back.
