Harsh federal mandatory minimum sentences for low-level drug crimes have done little to curb the drug problem in this nation, though they have resulted in overcrowded prisons.
So it’s refreshing to hear Attorney General Eric Holder talking about a more rational approach to dealing with those who break federal drug laws. For instance, he is pledging to no longer charge low-level, nonviolent drug offenders who have no ties to gangs or large-scale drug operations with offenses that require stiff mandatory sentences.
