The New Mexico Highlands University Cowboy wrestling team lost a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference home dual Friday night 33-15 to Adams State.
The Cowboys’ points came from two forfeits in the 141 and 149 weight classes and Travis Saxon’s 3-2 victory at 165. The Cowboys fell to 0-4 in the RMAC and 0-5 in overall dual competition.
The meet started at the 125-pound class as Cowboy Joshua Christopher lost 10-2 to Adam State’s Jerry Huff. In the next match at 133, Donovan Troup lost by a score of 12-5.
NMHU’s Christopher Davy and Mariano Montoya collected forfeit wins at 141 and 149, respectively.
The Grizzlies’ 157-pounder Justin Samora earned a technical fall with 1:17 left in the second period against Mark Martinez.
NMHU’s Travis Saxon (165 lbs.) rallied back in the third period from a 1-0 deficit to beat Adam State’s Darian Roberts 3-2.
In the 174-pound weight class, the Cowboys’ Brad Morgan lost a close battle against Mark Mabry Jr. who prevailed in the match 5-4. Andrew Roden was pinned by the Grizzlies’ Dominic DeMarco at 2:54 of the 184-pound match.
Former Cowboy wrestler Luke McPeek represented his new team Adams State at 197 lbs. McPeek, currently ranked fourth in NCAA Division II, was able to pin Cowboy Justin Wilmes 2:40 into the contest.
NMHU heavyweight R.K. Rockhill lost via pin by the Grizzlies Taylor Stam at 1:42 in the first period.
The team will next travel to Hays, Kan. for an RMAC road dual against Fort Hays State University at 7 p.m. Thursday. NMHU and coach Doug Moses will visit Nebraska-Kearney on Friday.
