Charles Goddard turns 99 today (Aug. 8). This past Saturday, relatives, friends, neighbors and fellow veterans honored him with a birthday party at his Myrtle Avenue home. Goddard owned and operated Southwest Gas Co. on Grand and Washington avenues for 30 years. His wife, Margaret Louise Goddard, was a teacher and principal at Legion Park Elementary. She passed away in 2007. Goddard, born in Denver, retired from the U.S. Army as a captain, after 43 months in the military. He was stationed at Fort Sill, Okla., and his tour of duty took him to Australia, the Philippines and other locations. During a brief ceremony, members of the local VFW presented Goddard with a plaque. Shown with him are, from left: Norma Esquibel, grand-daughter; Debbie Smith, a friend, from Arizona; Lynn Esquibel, Goddard’s primary care-giver; and John Esquibel, an adopted grandson.
