PORTALES — A 13-year-old boy was found guilty of murder in the death of a 21-year-old Eastern New Mexico University student.
The Roosevelt County jury returned guilty verdicts late Friday against the boy in the July 2010 death of Angel Vale.
The boy was convicted on charges that included second-degree murder, aggravated burglary, tampering with evidence and larceny.
He faces a maximum sentence of commitment in a Children, Youth and Families Department group facility until age 21.
Prosecutors say state law prevents them from seeking adult sanctions against the boy.
The Associated Press is not identifying the boy because of his age.
He was charged with breaking into Vale’s house in Portales, stealing her fiance’s rifle, shooting Vale when she stumbled upon him with the gun in her back yard.
