Max Pedro Chavez of Las Vegas will turn 100 on Saturday. Chavez was born on April 27, 1913 in Garita to Maximo Chavez and Getrudes Lucero. He married Teresita Roybal on Dec. 25, 1941 in Trujillo. He is the father of seven children, Max Jr., Fred, Gloria, John, the late Joseph, Sandra and Bill. He served in the military from 1942 to 1945 and is a veteran of World War II. While serving he was a private first class and worked as a combat engineer in France, Germany, England, Belgium and Luxembourg. Chavez and his family moved to Las Vegas in 1957. He also owns a ranch in Trujillo. He retired from New Mexico Highlands University in 1978 at the age of 65. A birthday celebration in his honor is scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
