The Albuquerque Isotopes held on to defeat the Round Rock Express 6-5 Monday night at Isotopes Park in the final homestand of the regular season.
Four Isotopes recorded a multi-hit game in the win. Elian Herrera was the only Albuquerque hitter with three base knocks, going 3 for 4 with two runs scored.
Javy Guerra pitched a scoreless ninth earning his 11th save in 12 save opportunities. The righty allowed one hit and struck out a batter. He leads the team in saves.
Chili Buss went 2 for 4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. The All-PCL team outfielder drove in his league-leading 95th and 96th RBI in the first inning on a two-run double to give the Isotopes an early 2-0 lead in the first.
Jonathan Sanchez tossed six-plus innings of five-run ball, while walking two and striking out eight. Four of the five runs of Sanchez came off of home runs.
Round Rock responded with two doubles in the second to cut the Isotopes lead in half. Albuquerque wasted no time getting that run back in the bottom half of the frame. Matt Angle (2 for 4, two runs) led off with a single, moved to second on a Justin Sellers walk and came around to score when Dee Gordon (2 for 4, RBI) roped a single up the middle.
Buss and Angle were part of the scoring in the third as well. Both singled and then during a double steal, moved up two bases, respectively, after the catcher’s throw went into centerfield when no one covered second. Sellers added a sacrifice fly to score Buss and extend the Isotopes lead to 5-1.
The see-saw of scoring continue in the fourth when Chris McGuiness blasted a two-run home run, making it 5-3. After a scoreless fifth, Elian Herrera singled, moved to second on an error and stole third. Tony Gwynn did not leave him there long, knocking a two-out single to put Albuquerque up 6-3. Three of the Isotopes’ six RBI came with two outs and Albuquerque stole four bases.
