Robertson will have a chance to redeem itself from one of just two regular-season losses on the girls’ soccer pitch this fall.
In order to make it to the Final Four in the Class 1A-3A state tournament, the Lady Cardinals (18-2) will have to get that redemption.
Fifth-seeded Socorro, the only team in the classification to have beaten fourth-seeded Robertson, defeated Bloomfield 5-0 this past weekend in the tourney’s opening round. That sets up a quarterfinal confrontation between the Lady Warriors (18-3) and RHS, which had the weekend off as one of the top four seeds in the bracket.
All Class 1A-3A girls’ quarterfinals will take place Thursday morning at the APS Soccer Complex, located on Albuquerque’s west side near Volcano Vista High School. Robertson-Socorro is on Field 4 at 8:30.
At the same time, ninth-seeded Santa Fe Prep, a 1-0 victor over Rehoboth, meets No. 1 Hope Christian on Field 1. Then at 9:30, No. 2 Sandia Prep faces seventh-seeded Bosque, which blanked Portales 6-0, on Field 2. And at the same time, over on Field 3, No. 3 St. Michael’s takes on sixth seed Taos, a 7-0 winner over Desert Academy in the first round.
Thursday’s winners advance to the semifinals at 10:30 a.m. Friday on Fields 2 and 3.
Friday’s winners play one another in the championship match at 9:30 a.m. Saturday on Field 2.
Tickets are $12 per day pass, $8 general admission, $5 seniors and students. Only cash will be accepted on site.
RHS opened the campaign with a 1-0 loss to Class 5A Clovis on Aug. 25 in Clovis and didn’t lose again until a 5-3 setback Sept. 22 in Socorro.
Socorro senior Dezirae Armijo, who scored four goals in that match, is the state’s leading scorer with 79 goals and 16 assists.
Robertson sophomore Caitlin Diefendorf is second with 50 goals and 17 assists.
