Cruising to a 9-0 verdict against outmanned Moreno Valley, the Robertson girls’ soccer team padded its win column with another shutout and the team’s second in three days.
It was a strong send-off for the Lady Cardinals, who paid tribute to parents during halftime of their last home match of the regular season.
As one of the top-ranked teams in Class 1A-3A, the “Beastie Girls” crew is expecting to be back at RHS field weekend after next, however. That’s when the first round of the state tournament takes place on campus sites of the higher-seeded squads, and Robertson expects to be in that category.
The Lady Cards pressured Moreno Valley goalkeeper Casey Brown throughout the match Monday, getting off several shots before Morgan Diefendorf opened the scoring about 10 minutes in, dropkicking the ball past Brown.
Morgan’s sister Caitlin followed a couple minutes later with the first of two scores. It was 3-0 at halftime.
Kristen Montaño led the Lady Cardinals’ effort with three second-half goals and Morgan Diefendorf, Ashley Jaramillo and Elena Martinez each added scores in the latter 40 minutes.
Jaramillo started the match at keeper but switched to a field position midway through the first half; Nicoletta Litherland took her spot at goal and completed the shutout.
Robertson improved to 16-2 overall; the Timberwolves slipped to 3-10.
