Cardinals, Dons triumph in close calls to kick off season

Prep football kicked off Friday night with two clutch victories for Robertson and West Las Vegas.

The Cardinals, ranked as high as No. 1 in Class 4A preseason polls, won a marquee matchup with Class 3A's top team, defending state champion Estancia, 27-26.

In doing so, Robertson snapped the visiting Bears' 17-game winning streak that dated back to October 2014. The Bears went 13-0 last fall.

Up north in Clayton, the Dons scored twice in the second half after a 0-0 deadlock in the first half hour of game time, holding on for a 14-8 win.
